Kate Bee is a writer from New York who went to college to study counseling psychology and currently spends her days playing with children in Cleveland, Ohio. She does not enjoy crossword puzzles, nail polish, or wearing shoes; but takes great pleasure in cooking delicious vegan food, climbing on rocks, and painting with all of the colors of the wind. She prefers to be outside whenever possible, climbing, swimming, hiking, and generally adventuring. She is not too particular about genre of music, but finds certain niches where she finds herself most at home. She never gets sick of Old Crow Medicine Show, Olof Arnalds, Beethoven, Cats in Boots, or Cake.

Six Reasons to Add Little Sur to Your Rainy Day Listening.

They’re westerners moved east. Frontman Josh Meer and a bunch of friends brought the Bay Area to Brooklyn and their sound is smooth and fits as easily into country roads as it does rainy city streets.  It’s good music for a rainy day, …

Murrieta–lively, beautiful desert folk music for everyone.

If I listened to music when I am backpacking, this would be it.  This album has a nice, natural sound and beautiful, thought provoking lyrics. Murrieta (named for a Chilean outlaw) is a collection of six gifted gentlemen based in Arizona. Each one …

The Lonesome Fellas–should not be so lonesome.

The Lonesome Fellas are a bluegrass-y folk band from South Carolina.  They released a demo EP in May and it is really good.  The tunes are jaunty enough for a backyard picnic with friends, watermelon, and barbeque, and the lyrics are deep enough …

Miner–authentic, natural California.

When most people think of California, they think of surfers and movie stars.  Those things are in California, but there is so much more.  There are mountains and desert, date farms, Salvation Mountain, Slab City, elementary schools which grow their own food for …

The Retro Frames–the ultimate thrift store treasure.

This is a cool EP. It was labelled “folk” in my inbox, but I’m not sure that is what I would call it.  I am not sure what else I would call it, but it is cool.  The master behind The Retro …

Shaun Bosch–brought to you by the gorgeous Canadian wilderness

Some albums paint a portrait, a portrait of the artist or of the listener or both.  This album is a landscape.  It sprawls with gentle highlights, mountains and valleys, trees and rivers, the sun illuminating surfaces and casting shadows.  “Silence” is one of …

Kyle Cox–perfectly balanced southern rock-and-roll.

When I think of Florida, I think of old people and Disney World. This, despite having many friends there who consistently remind me that Florida has one of the fastest growing youth cultures in the nation.  Kyle Cox has driven that fact home …

Seven Reasons to Love Kollin Baer

  1. This Texan turned Carolinian plays a whole bunch of instruments, including all of the sounds you will hear on his “The Woods” EP.  He also has a voice like browned butter and a hoppy IPA. It’s smooth, mellow, earthy, but there …

Benjamin James Caldwell–timeless, nostalgic, beautiful.

If we were all on the Oregon Trail together, Benjamin James Caldwell would be the young gentleman still singing softly around the campfire when everyone else has all gone to bed. Somehow he would still be up at the crack of dawn with …

Instead of Sleeping–glamorous indie rock and roll from Pittsburgh

I confess that I did not realize that there were so many bands out there with tons of drums.  This week I’ve covered two bands with double drums and drummers/percussionists. I’m finding it fantastic.  When I first listened to Instead of Sleeping, I …
