4 “Best of 2019” Contenders

SYML – “Take Me Apart”

Artist SYML is having a moment. Recently selling out shows across the world and in the midst of a US tour, the artist released an impressive 2019 debut LP before releasing an equally intriguing single, “Take Me Apart”. It is proof that he is here to stay, while his brand of indie pop is expressive and heartbreaking. We recently covered his track “Clean Eyes”, which has started to break through and give the producer/songwriter much deserved attention, and solidified his place as one of our favorite new artists.

Marcus King – “The Well”

Coming from the rubber city Akron, Ohio, we have grown up on blues rock. The Black Keys have helped to keep sharp guitar riffs in style for the last decade. So without hesitation, we jumped on the tracks of Marcus King. His blues rock is a little more bluesy, and perhaps a little more rock heavy. His voice is perfect for the dirty blues style and blends it near perfectly. The young artist is prepping his debut El Dorado and received help from Dan Auerbach. King is one to watch in the coming year. His sound is explosive.

Smoke Fairies – “Disconnect”

The disorientating video for the new single from one of our favorite new acts brings their talent into focus. Working with famed producer Phil Ek for the recent tracks, the duo jump through the speakers with a searing rock sound. “Times of darkness are when people are often the most imaginative,” says Jessica Davies in reflecting on the album’s title. “It helps you to see all the wonders of the world you hadn’t noticed before – the things you’ve been blind to because you’ve been on autopilot for so long.”

Seafret – “Love Won’t Let Me Leave”

The UK duo have a soaring indie pop sound listeners cannot help but sing along to. On their newest single, the act are sure to find a mass audience with their anthemic craftsmanship. “Love Won’t Let Me” is a fine piece from a rising young act we wait expectantly to hear more. Their album, Most of Us Are Strangers is forthcoming.
