Layer Cake – “Numb”
-If you’re looking for up tempo rock music, definitely check out this new track from Layer Cake. The energy is palpable right from the start. The vocal is clear and easy to follow, which bounces nicely along the spirited electric guitar work. I really appreciate the sense of “space” in this composition, where the sound actually has space to breathe. I know it’s not the same kind of band, but something about this sound reminds me a bit of Matt Thiessen from Relient K. The glowing melodic style and relatable lyrical style makes that connection even more vibrant for me. I will say I had to double check the title because the lyric “holding onto you” is repeated so often it seems a more likely title than “Numb.” It would definitely work for a pop rock playlist.
Headnoise – “Winter”
-If you’re a fan of electric guitars right at the midpoint of grungy and clear, then click play on this song. There’s just the right amount of fuzz to give them texture and just enough crispness for them to cut through. The vocal style is outstanding, allowing the gruff moments to pull the listener in while the soaring vocal elements give the listener a sense of flying off the stage with the band. It’s definitely got a cool vibe to it. I’m not sure if I’d call this alt rock, pop rock, or just straight up indie rock as it’s got elements of each. The bridge around the 2 minute mark does a nice job of shifting the listener’s attention, setting up another powerful chorus to bring the song in for a landing. This one is a hit for anyone who loves great guitar work and soaring, expressive vocals.
Zuffalo – “Morning Light”
-There’s a saucy blues energy to this track that caught my attention right away. The bassline here is perhaps the main character of the whole story. It’s so smooth and pulls the listener right into the heartbeat of the song. The vocal is outstanding, this careful balance of smoky and clear, creating a sense of intimacy while still popping through the rest of the production. The bluesy guitar work is outstanding, giving the whole sound a vibe that feels like it could have come along any time from the 60s to the 90s. The melodica (or keys?) solo around the 2 minute mark is a nice touch. I dig this whole song. The groove, the instrumentation, and the end sound is all rewarding. This one deserves a spot at the top of your playlist; spin it, groove it, and share it.
