The Burney Sisters – “Seeds I’ve Sown”
-If vocal harmonies are your “thing” then you’ve come to the right place. This song has some of the most wonderful songwriting we’ve heard in a while. The expressive vocals invite the listeners right into what feels like a warm sonic hug. I appreciate the metaphor that is both agricultural and scriptural about how in life we reap what we sow. The line “my life is flashing by too quick” is more familiar and relatable than I am comfortable admitting; it’s really something wonderful and convicting in a way. The orchestral elements on this track give the lyrical style even more lasting impact. It’s definitely a special song.
David Hilderhoff – “Lesson in Letting Go”
-Every once in a while you hear a vocal that has just the right amount of rasp and crackle that makes it feel familiar and unique all at once. Hilderhoff has a great voice and the lyrical style is right on that careful country music line of being heavy without crossing into cheesy. It’s a heartache song about the end of a relationship with someone special. It’s about all those hard concepts people contemplate after the end of a relationship like what the parents might think, how to physically move on. It’s raw and vulnerable. The image of the dead rose in the chorus is vivid, perfectly capturing the mood of the song.
Blue Cactus – “Resolution” (with Erin Rae)
-I realize that “ambling” is not actually a musical term, but goshdarnit I think it’s perfect here. The rhythm ambles along nicely, allowing the listener to feel almost invited into the song. The vocals are delightful, accessible, and inviting in their own right. It feels equal parts like classic country and contemporary Americana, with a gentle comfortable style about it. The electric guitars really sparkle in the production here, which allows the vocals to resonate over the rest of the production for a delicate effect. The lyrics call into question the direction of the relationship, which I suppose is highlighted by the unhurried ambling nature of the track, but also there’s an underlying question… what are we doing here? Let’s find some resolution. Amen to that.
