Josaleigh Pollett – “Cherry”
-If you’re looking for a bit of an unconventional style of “pop,” click on this track and you’ll instantly hear what I mean. In fact, one could reasonably call this alt pop. That said, I found it such a captivating song that I couldn’t click away. The vocal from Pollett is exceptional, creating these textures that are simultaneously intimate while also having this characteristic narrative style, too. There’s this central image of blood being not blood, but rather the juice of a cherry. I’m not a lyric interpreter, so I won’t pretend to completely know what it’s about. I will just say that it’s as abstract in lyrics as it is in some of the instrumentation… but it’s precisely that “can’t click away” energy that makes it such a unique and fascinating piece of art.
Sid Simons – “Under My Skin”
-There’s a subtle harmony in the vocal of this song that is pretty much 90% of why I approved the track for coverage. I mean, don’t get me wrong, the guitars and overall composition are great… but those vocals caught my ear right away. I’m not sure if I have a good band comparison here, but I know that I love the fullness of this sound. The lyrics are ultimately about intimacy, of having someone who just gets you and connects deeper than anyone else. It’s a love song, of a sort, but it’s also a human existential song about what it means to resonate with someone in a way that transcends all of the trite pop song lyrics. If its any consolation to how much I connect with this track, a memory well over 25 years old immediately flooded to the front of my mind. If that’s not the power of music, I don’t know what is. This is a gem.
