The Beard and the Bird – “Waitin’ on May”
-It’s got swing. It’s got a sweet fiddle. It’s got incredible vocal harmonies. What’s not to like about this song? It’s great to hear that there are people in the 21st century making music that would have been immensely popular a century ago. The writing here is wonderful, charming just like period music was. I appreciate the subtle energy of the banjo on this one, too. If you’re a fan of a good steel guitar solo, that’s worth the play on this one alone. The full composition is timeless and deeply satisfying for fans of Americana and alt country music.
Travis Parker – “Southeastern Home”
-It’s not every day that I get to hear a voice that stops me in my tracks, but that happened when I first heard Travis Parker. I’m not sure if I have the right musicological words for what Parker brings, but there’s a characteristic in his vocal that just commands attention. You just also believe every dang word that he sings. I appreciate the sincerity in the lyrics as well, seeking a new beginning in a new southeastern home. The storytelling feels genuine and the sway of the song lulls the listener right into the warmth of the song’s energy. There’s ultimately a hope in the song’s composition that comes through to the listener all the way to the end. Also – for what it’s worth – I absolutely love the little mandolin solo near the end of the track. This is just a delightful bit of alt country music making. Give it a spin!
