Three engaging new singer songwriters you’ll want for your summer playlist

Wax Owls – “Freckle”
-If you’ve been around my folk music coverage for any length of time, this sound is probably familiar to you. It’s a folksy energy with a good guitar and an outstanding vocal; that’s something I’m always happy to support. This track has a clarity to it that stands out from a production stand point right away. But you know what makes this song go from good to great? The VOCAL HARMONIES! Oh my heavens. The lyrics have a nice mix of abstract and down to earth, allowing the listener to find a connection. It’s a good tune with some outstanding harmonies that keep me clicking for more.

Meg Chandler – “This House”
-I’ve been a fan of the articulate singer songwriter style for a long time, but there’s a certain style of production that makes this genre really work. Chandler really nails the sound with this track. The lyrical imagery of the house and the life they built together is rich with memories. As someone who is married to his best friend, there’s something deep and personal listening to this song. It’s emotional, that’s for sure. It’s a song that is a personal reflection from the artist, yet many listeners can picture their own situation in it. The intimacy of the recording and the gentleness in Chandler’s voice make the whole message resonate with sincerity.

Ben Drysdale – “Listen Now”
-I’m a sucker for a well-written song that really pulls the listener in from the start. When I clicked play on this song, I couldn’t help but be drawn into the energy of the track. There’s an approachability to it that makes it feel familiar. The line about how “there’ll be better times” resonates for me. It’s ultimately a song about coming alongside someone going through a hard time and helping them get to the next step, to the light. It’s a great song with this inspirational energy. I don’t always resonate with these types of lyrical messages, but this one hit just right at the right time for me.
