EP Review: Lando Flakes – Our Life in Hibernation

If you’re a fan of singer songwriters, give this new EP from Lando Flakes a spin. It has a contemplative, calming style to it. It’s sure to win over fans from our acoustic folk readership as well as some leaning more towards pop rock.

The opening song “Nothing to do with you” has a sad lyrical concept. The sadness is matched in the chord choices and overall melodic style. It’s not blues, per se, but it’s oozing with relationship melancholy.

“Taking My Life” takes a familiar phrase and flips it around. Instead of “taking a life” being about death, this song is about someone giving you life by just being with them. “You make me feel like I’m alive when you’re taking my life.” The colorful electric guitar does a nice job of developing more of a pop rock style with a meaningful, engaging message.

The following “Just a Feeling” has a nice percussive energy to it and a great bass line. There’s a soulful energy to the vocal on this one that feels a bit different from the others on the album… and it works! The lyrical theme is about trying to stay positive and hoping not to ever “get that low again.” It’s got some interesting and unexpected spiritual imagery mixed in on this one.

The penultimate track “Pile of Words” goes back to the acoustic style of the opener. There’s a melancholy to the composition that puts me in mind of early 90s alt rock. Some of the lyrics feel blended together in an almost grunge-like way. That said, it’s a unique piece on the EP.

The final track “Hurricane Days” introduces a piano to the mix. The vocal harmonies also add in a unique element. The song feels like a genre blend that is unapologetically unconventional. It’s an interesting way to end an album that holds a lot of conventional rhythms and sounds. Out with the proverbial and experimental “bang.”

If you’re a fan of unique singer songwriters, give this EP a shot.
