Three new alt country tracks for fans of the real deal

Remy Sher – “Barstow”
-The first thing I did when I heard this song was share it with a friend of mine who is a songwriter. If that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is. It’s a beautiful story that shows how broken human life can be sometimes. It’s full of pain and anguish. But you know what? It’s also got this underlying beautiful hope about striving to love. It’s a little bit philosophical, a little bit theological, and an absolutely heart wrenching listening experience. This is what alt country is all about right here, folks.

Dom Glynn and His Sunday Best – “Time Would Slow Down”
-When you tell people you listen to country music, this is what a lot of them think of in their minds. Aspects of bluegrass and roots country come together for an absolutely charming sound on this new song from Dom Glynn and His Sunday Best. The melody moves along nicely conveying a message of both devotion and heartache with one swift stroke of the pen. The fiddle work definitely sets the track apart, but the whole performance is great. The laughter in the midst of the second verse makes it feel like the singer is absolutely happy to be there. It reminds me of stories I grew up hearing of bygone generations going to barn dances. This feels like the real deal.

MisterMoon – “Lucky Penny”
-Sometimes genre does more harm than good when it comes to describing music. In the case of MisterMoon, I think alt country only tickles the surface of what you hear. It’s got an up tempo style and a ton of energetic harmonies. I’m not sure it’s alt country in the sense of sounding like some old Hank Sr. tune, but it certainly captures a vibe that doesn’t fit with country or pop mainstreams. No matter what you call it, this high energy performance begs the listener to connect with these talented artists. If you’ve ever spent a “night out running,” you’ll definitely relate to the story here.
