Rolo – “Circles”
-Sometimes a melody just captures your heart and pulls you into a song. That’s what happened for me when I first heard this promising new track from Rolo. I genuinely enjoy the vocal and the chill energy of the track, but it was the subtle chord change work in the melody that really stood out for me. Fans of chill pop rock will find a lot to like in this sound. The lyrical theme is about caring for a friend who seems to be bottling up everything they are experiencing. It’s ultimately a song about compassion and care. I love everything about it.
Rum Jungle – “Did the Morning Let You Down”
-The melodic structure of this song is absolutely fantastic. The percussive energy and quality vocal are also impressive. I appreciate the way the vibes of the song feel like timeless pop rock. There are stylings here that remind me a bit of mid 90s alt rock, yet the optimistic chord structures definitely feel more positive vibes than much of what came out in that era. The soaring electric guitars here create a real sense of space. It’s ultimately a love song, “all I’ve been looking for is… you.” It’s about the feeling of being disappointed that the next day is starting because you had such an amazing night with someone. Ooh lala. It’s a great tune from start to finish.
Motel Sundown – “Midnight Blue”
-“Another life from another time…” Amen to that. I told a friend this song is “like a time machine” with comparisons to both the Carpenters and Fleetwood Mac. I stand by that comparison even with more listens. The quality of the lead vocal is undeniable. There’s a complexity in the instrumentation and overall melody that is really satisfying to the ear. The style feels like it pulls together a range of influences from the late 60s into the 1970s, making for a wonderful sound that resonates in the 21st century.
