The Talbott Brothers – “The Road”
-Song titles like “Home” and “The Road” seem very common, but they often have relatable themes. This track “The Road” from The Talbott Brothers includes their characteristic folk acoustic guitar work and wonderful vocal harmonies. There’s a richness to the production mix that makes it feel like it’s building tension from the start of the track all the way through. The lyrics emphasize the importance of figuring it out as you go in a relationship. If you’ve ever taken on that adventure with someone special, you’ll know just how true this is; you can’t figure it all out at the start. You have to do it on down the road. Great tune.
Lonnie Rott – “What I Haven’t Done Yet”
-Sometimes I run across a song that just… teases me to listen to a little bit more. This was one of those songs. It didn’t knock my socks off from the start, but I just… kept listening. I wanted to know what was going to happen next, like a good narrative. I don’t like to be too obvious with certain types of lyrics, but let’s just say it’s an appropriate theme for this time of year (yesterday, in particular). It’s a subtle tune about the work we still have left to do with our time here on earth. Maybe one day – in this life or the next – Lonnie and I will sit down and talk about the river.
Natalie Del Carmen – “The Highway”
-You’ll listen to 1000 folk songs before you hear another lead vocalist this good. I’m not exaggerating. Natalie Del Carmen has an outstanding vocal. Something about the balance between the acoustic guitar and the chill banjo really works on this track. It’s got a charming, engaging style. If you’re looking for a sound that feels like tradition while also having a fresh vibe to it, definitely spin this one. There are a lot of comp artists to draw on this one, but I think Del Carmen stands on her own here. It’s an emerging folk sound that’s sure to win over some followers among our readership.
