Three new folk songs that give hope for the future of the genre

Morgantown – “Vegas”
-I love these harmonies. Full stop. The review could end here. But you know what? It’s also just an amazing song with a gorgeous melody and interesting lyrics as well. If you’re a fan of acoustic folk music (you’re in the right place), you’re going to love this song. Morgantown are a talented folk duo with expressive songwriting and “Vegas” is a standout track. I really enjoy the subtle instrumental elements from the mandolin and steel guitar that serve to support the exceptional vocal harmonies. This is one of the best songs of the year so far and I hope more people will spin it.

The Nautical Theme – “To the Flame”
-There’s a wonderful acoustic energy right from the start of this track that feels just right for the folk genre. Once the vocal harmonies enter the track, it goes from good to great. I appreciate how they pass the lead from the different vocalists, creating a bit of a different texture for each verse. The breathy, emotional singing makes the song feel even more intimate. The lyrical theme of “heat” and burning makes a parallel to passion in a relationship. It’s definitely one to listen carefully and enjoy the quality vocal work along the way.

Robby Hecht – “Someone to Dance With”
-The melody of this song captured my attention on very first listen. It’s great when a song can do this where it just reaches out of the device and pulls me straight into it. The vocal style is intimate, relaxed, and invites the listener to connect much in the way of artists like Gregory Alan Isakov or William Fitzsimmons. The lyrical theme is about seeking out intimacy i.e. someone to dance with. Some of the production elements later in the track move away from the type of folk we usually feature, but it certainly works on this track. It’s worth spinning to hear the creative future potential for the genre.
