Graham St. Clair and the West Texas Wind – “Roaming Home”
-Everything about this song feels like the genuine article. The fiddle, the guitar, and the lead vocal all feel like they were forged in lived experience. The poetic songwriting highlights the life of a heartbroken drifter. “If only I had known how true it was that pride comes before the fall.” That’s great. I already liked the song and then the steel guitar solo hit and it went from good to great. This one’s a gem.
The Barker Brothers – “Every Bit of Weight”
-I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the Barker Brothers are fans of the Avett Brothers. Everything from the banjo to the harmony styles are reminiscent of the famous North Carolina fraternal group. The Barker Brothers definitely deserve to stand on their own, though. The expressive songwriting and rich lyricism on this track about knowing your time and place in history is intriguing. The theme of “time beating like a drum” feels relatable for me. The balance between philosophy and natural imagery certainly feels like it fits well within the time-honored traditions of Americana music. Definitely share this one with your friends who love the Avett Brothers. It’s a great sound.
The Beard and the Bird – “Thankful”
-If you’re a fan of pacey pop jazz music, you’ll find a lot to like on this one. The standup bass wins it for me, but the whole composition is a lot of fun. The lyrics highlight the feeling of wanting to marry someone the moment you meet them. The jazzy string work feels just right. The combination of the danceable rhythm and the clever, smile-inducing lyrics make for an enjoyable tune across the board. Fans of new pop-jazz outfits like the Bygones will find a lot to like on this new tune from the Beard and the Bird. Definitely give it a spin and share it with your friends!
