Three folk songwriters that will bring a poetic blessing to your midweek

Mary Ella Hunt – “I just don’t want you seeing this”
-If contemplative and experimental folk is your thing, give this song a spin. Some of the layers add an interesting mystery and emotion to the performance. There’s an intimacy to the recording style that’s sure to connect for a lot of listeners. Hunt sings with a sincerity and depth that makes the sound stand out in a crowded folk scene currently. The lyrical theme is intimacy and it comes across with a wonderfully personal way.

Anna Hudson – “Scattered showers”
-One of the words used to describe music in our submission platform is “moody,” which I don’t always understand what that means. This song… this is a “moody” song. You can feel the emotional gravity just hanging in the air with the whole song. It’s not necessarily the more traditional folk sound that we typically feature, but it’s really intriguing. Something about Hudson’s phrasing reminds me of what I love about Rayland Baxter. It’s thoughtful, precise, all while having this artful fluidity to it. The whole composition and intimate lyrical content works for a heady folk song.

Specific Coast – “All in”
-If you clicked on this post for “indie folk” then you probably were expecting a sound like this. The harmonies remind me a lot of bands like the Lumineers. The moving rhythm feels like it’s perfect for a film soundtrack. It’s got a real sense of adventure. The lyrics are about enduring in the face of adversity, knowing that you are both committed to each other and all in. There’s a fundamental sensitive style to the lyrics that comes across both in the instrumentation and the imagery. It’s a folk song about endurance; it works.
