Kara Cole – “Mary Francis”
-If you’re a fan of classic music, check out this fantastic track from Kara Cole. The vocal style feels like it was minted back in the 1960s. The production on this track is outstanding. The lyrics are about going back to the good old days when the main character was with the person she’s singing to. It’s a heartbreak blues song with that country flavor in the guitars. The organ, though, sets this song from good to great. I could listen to this kind of music all the live long day.
Forty Elephant Gang – “Miss you”
-When I first heard the mandolin in the opening of this song, I thought it was going to take more of a country or bluegrass turn. In reality, the song feels a bit like a poppy blues-inspired rock tune. Think Blues Traveler, if you will. There’s a jangly vibe to the song that feels quite comfortable and familiar. The lyrics are quizzical in places, with a clear message of being heartbroken. It’s a style that feels both timeless and satisfying. If you’ve ever experienced heartbreak, this one will connect.
James Coates – “Somebody again”
-This is a song about the search for love. The “searching high and low” theme of the song is reminiscent of classic songwriting. Coates has a slight rasp in his voice that makes for a good, textured sound. The blues-inspired rock sound works well on this one. It’s a nice balance between the lightness (hope) and the darkness (sadness) that seeking love can mean. There’s a genuineness in the seeking that feels good, rather than desperate. I’m rooting for ya, man.
