The Madelines – “Amy”
-There’s something about the energy of this track that wins me over right away. It jams along with a solid rhythm, but then the fuzzy guitars enter and make it even better. The effect on the vocal is just right, creating a cool texture that stands out from the crowd without being so distorted as to make the words difficult to follow. Lyrically, the track is about desire for connection with someone specific, but there’s this relatability that anyone listening can connect. I would say the sound feels like early 2000s alt rock, but I’m not sure there’s an easy comp band for this sound. It’s well worth a spin and is sure to get your toes tapping.
waltzerr – “Counting Clovers”
-If you’re looking for a chill alt rock sound, definitely check out this new track from waltzerr. The percussive energy keeps the song moving along, but it’s the quality of the lead vocal that won me over with this sound. There’s a clarity to the vocal that is much better than most bands in the genre. The chord work here creates a real sense of balance, allowing the listener to connect with the lyrical message. Lyrically, the narrative is about a difficult relationship with someone unhealthy, so it that regard it can be a bit unsettling. Yet, I do hope that it’s a story of ultimately surviving and moving beyond this difficult circumstance. There’s such beauty in between the ugliness that makes the song feel like transcendent truth. This one carries a ton of meaning in a sonically pleasing package. Give it a shot!
Wolf Twin – “Best Days”
-The beat of this song feels like it’s almost a disco sound… and I mean that with the utmost complimentary tone. It propels the energy along, allowing the guitars and vocal to absolutely cut through the production. There’s so much swagger in this track, it makes you feel cooler just listening to it. (Yes, really. Try it.) I know this song wasn’t written for a suburban minivan-driving soccer dad, but I’ll tell you it sure resonates for me. The mysterious backing elements in the production, the percussive vibe that slaps, and the overall dynamics of the track are fantastic. This is the kind of song that as soon as it’s over, you click back and play it again. It’s a whole vibe and I am HERE for it.
