Canadian artist Dax has been highly prolific during the last year. Yet, his influences and art are deeply rooted in styles pre and post pandemic. On “Dear Mom”, we hear the artist intentionally craft a beat heavy exaltation of his warrior of a mom. We have been hip to his art since his riveting “Black Lives Matter” and while we do not necessarily cover much rap, Dax is the type of artist who defies all preference and normality. His ability to rapidly fire tightly constructed lines is incredible, yet it is both his earnestness and vulnerability that makes him a top tier talent. For example, “Dear Mom” is a classic nod to a specific woman yet listeners of all walks of life can relate if not be moved emotionally (even hardened rock critics like us became a little misty eyed). If you appreciate skillful songwriting and beats that will inspire, then stop all you are doing and consume the expansive catalogue of Dax.
