For years, we have kept an ear on the music of young songwriter Emily James. With an impressive catalogue that is growing in both substance and genre, James has built a humble pool of influences and incredible tracks. After moving from New York to Los Angeles, and releasing her debut LP Til The Morning, the artist is ready for continued breakthrough as one of the most talented and approachable singer songwriters. Working with Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy) on her last album, the collaboration helped the already gifted James grow in her mature songwriting with little regard to genre or style.
“My songs don’t always fit into one style of music. I write what truly inspires me from my feelings, emotions and experiences, and I try not to let any specific genre box me in,” James explains.
While garnering many comparisons to the likes of Taylor Swift, we think there is a little more introspection carried in James’ songwriting that helps set her apart from many of her contemporaries. On her latest track “What Do I”, she beautifully crafts a piano ballad worthy of any pop or pop folk playlist. The track carries attention through as it builds and listeners hear a rising star with an impressive musical intelligence.
