Three acoustic folk songs that will remind you why you love this genre so much

Highland Express – “Yellow Moon”
-The buoyant energy of this acoustic folk track by Highland Express captures my attention with every listen. The guitar features prominently as the main backing instrument, but the full band carries the load here. The vocal has an understated but rewarding style, creating a real sense of rising tension from the opening narrative element through the end of the track. Interestingly, there’s no a true chorus on this one. But, let me tell you, there is a fabulous whistle solo and an overall energy of just jamming with some friends. I appreciate the unconventional structure and the abstract lyrics, providing a vibe that feels a bit like it means what you want it to mean to you. It reminds me a bit of that parable of letting someone you love go… and when they come back to you it’s all the more rewarding. It’s definitely one to feel and contemplate deeply.

JP Nguyen – “Honey Don’t Worry”
-This is a heartache story about a lover who left. It’s got expressive, personable lyrics about what it feels like to have someone leave. The guitar is the mainstay, but the piano and banjo both serve to create additional emotional textures in the song. While it’s not the most optimistic song in the world, there’s a certain brightness in the energy on the chorus. The lyrics come around to a message that the relationship wasn’t going to work out anyways. Sometimes the best thing we can do is find out who isn’t the best fit for us. This song captures that sentiment with considerable Americana and folk charm.

Heath Church – “Breathe Again”
-If you’re a fan of relaxing acoustic singer songwriters, check out this track from Heath Church. There’s an easy going melodic energy that propels this song with the acoustic guitar as a main character. The line, “it feels so good to breathe again” is about feeling like you’ve finally caught up. If you’ve ever gone through a rough stage of life and finally made it out the other end, this song will definitely resonate. It’s about looking out from the stage to see someone who is special to you. Even if you’re not a performer, there’s something inherently optimistic and rewarding about this song. It just feels good. Give it a spin.
