Clover County – “Ultraviolet”
-The energy of this track feels like it takes elements of 80s, 90s, and more recent rock and rolled it into a wholly new sound. I appreciate the brightness of the percussion and bounce that the track has. But the production is brilliant, allowing the vocal to cut through even with the full rock style. The lyrics are about trying to get noticed by someone you care about and feeling like they still don’t see you. The way the song shifts into a more melancholy reflection section on the bridge before moving back to the energy of the chorus really works well; this whole track is a clinic on the use of dynamics in modern rock songwriting. It’s great.
Co-Stanza – “Bet On Love”
-The line about being “in love with harmony” hit me a bit harder than I was ready to admit; that said, this song is fundamentally a great piece of indie rock songwriting. It has a charming melodic structure that feels a bit syrupy and a bit punctuated. The end result of the production decisions here make it a song that stands out from the crowd while fitting in with the 21st century indie rock scene. The lyrics are a bit of a dare, encouraging the person to bet on love (instead of cynicism). You could go through life thinking that no relationship will ever work out, or you can bet on love and find that special someone. It’s a challenge with a careful articulation that invites the listener in with an atmospheric rock sound that’s satisfying to the ear while convicting with its lyrics.
Rohin – “Homemade Novocaine”
-This is one of the most dynamic tracks I’ve heard in months. That’s not exaggeration, either. I describe it as dynamic because it has both production and lyrical elements that make it rise to another level. There’s a certain brand of indie pop rock that makes me turn up the volume and just vibe out… this song fits that mold, for sure. The lyric theme is about a desire to be numb, “keep me inside, keep me awake, feed me the highs, drift away…” Wow. It’s extraordinarily well done. I’m not sure what sort of substances this track is actually about, but I do know that the artful emotional concoction of the song is absolutely outstanding. I’m impressed by this sound, the production, and the vibes of the message.
