Lina K.O. – “Back”
-There’s a lushness to this composition that I absolutely love. It’s clear that Lina K.O. is a talented vocalist. The calm energy here definitely invites the listener in to a warm embrace. That easy going lyrical style urges the listener to lean in and listen closely. I love that this song is simultaneously a track that can have deep meaning, but it’s also one that you can just put on in the background for some beautiful ambiance. The unhurried indie pop style here is a joy and I hope others will like it as much as I do.
Caldher – “Make You Stay”
-There’s an upbeat style here that’s definitely a lot of fun. It’s an excitable percussive style. The lyric about going “back and forth” is relatable, especially for the volatile early parts of a relationship. There’s a tangible excitement in the lyrics about the desire to be with someone… and the desire to have them want to be with you with equal energy. I appreciate the layered harmonies on the chorus the most, but the whole song takes on a truly unique indie pop flavor.
Molly Seger – “Glass House”
-I thought about putting this song with folk pop because it’s that, too. But honestly I just want to share this with you all. The vocal has this wonderful resonance in the production that makes it stand out. Sometimes when people try production tricks to make the music stand out it just frustrates me, but here it really works. There’s something about the way the sound carries that makes it feel both intimate and like it is standing out over the crowd. It’s a cool feel that mixes intimacy and impressiveness. By the way, the lyric about “reading between the lines of the love letters you never wrote.” DANG. Love that. This is a beautiful heartache song.
