Hannah Wyatt – “Santo Rio, goodbye”
-I hate to overuse the word “breathtaking” when it comes to music, but I kid you not Wyatt has an effect here that is nothing short of breathtaking. The phrasing is amazing. The timing of the track pulls the listener right in, but Wyatt’s voice really steals the show. Once the duo vocal enters, the song goes from good to great. The lyrics mention a range of characters all set in the place of the southwest, full if images that provide a connotation of the meandering realities of that region. The production on this track is so wonderfully balanced; I find this to be a remarkable performance that I’m putting on my song of the year candidates list.
SloCoast – “What are we waiting for?”
-This track has all the markings of a good Americana song. It opens with quality strings and a solid lead vocal. As it unfolds, the tension opens into a folksy, up tempo expression of momentum. It’s time to stop waiting around and take action. The banjo work on this track is particularly good. The entire mood of the track is about getting out of our complacency to take action as a collective. The harmonies make this hard hitting message go down smooth. It’s definitely an intriguing style of Americana that we’re happy to support here.
Kolby Knickerbocker – “Mother”
-If you were around the website last year, then you know Kolby’s name. This track has a soulful core to it that expresses thankfulness and gratitude toward the mother of his children (sorry I should have covered yesterday for Mother’s Day in the US). The slow burning soulful style here is perfect for the lyrical message. The heart of gratitude in the song is evident from the opening. “You are brave. You are strong. You are enough. You are the heart of this family.” Amen to that. This is beautiful. Share it with someone you love.
