Deathcruiser – “Superman”
-I’m such a sucker for a good acoustic guitar with a solo vocalist. I think 90% of the music I listen to has this general acoustic folk style. Deathcruiser adds in some extra instrumentation, but the soul of the track really is in the guitar and vocal. The expressive lyrics are about not being a superman and needing help. It’s such an important song from a mental health perspective. “Been too long since I’ve called home.” Well, that definitely resonates. How many of us feel the sort of isolation felt here? And how many of us have no one to blame but ourselves? This is a fabulous track that might hit you in some emotional places you didn’t see coming — fair warning.
luca! – “who cares”
-This song has been driving me crazy for over a week. I mean that in the most complimentary way possible; it’s a really great piece of songwriting. The fingerpicking electric guitar work in the opening really reminds me of another song and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. Please, if you know what song this sounds like that’s avoiding my music rolodex brain, shoot me a tweet or email me or something. Until then, just enjoy this great tune. The lyrics are definitely loaded with some emotional heaviness about the feeling of wanting to run away from a broken relationship. It’s a romantic lament, really, and the call to get back together is the heart of the track. The indie pop style on the guitar makes it feel warm and welcoming, echoing the call for reunification.
Cate Tomlinson – “Damage Control”
-Call it pop. Call it singer songwriter. I don’t care what you call it, as long as you call it a good song. Cate Tomlinson has a wonderful voice, but it’s the gritty lyrics on this track that really makes it work. I appreciate the attitude and sincerity of this track. The raw emotion in the song really sets it apart from the crowd for us. The dynamic percussive style on the break helps the vocals to pop and set the chorus apart from the rest of the song. This one’s sure to appeal to pop rock and indie pop fans.
