Luke De-Sciscio – “Moon”
Luke is one of our faves. His voice is beautifully arresting and often has a way of lowering our existential angst. His songs are invitations to a different world, transcending genres. On “Moon”, he reminds us of Andrew Bird, while still being fantastically original. De-Sciscio is a perfect example of an artist who you say “why is this guy not on every radio across the universe?” and therefore, is a great gem of an under discovered artist.
Rett Smith (featuring Jessica Lea Mayfield) – “The Hook”
If you read us regularly, you will know our feelings of JLM. We were excited to hear her collaboration with Austin artist Rett Smith. We have always been a sucker for duets and shared vocals. This one works with the complementary vocal styles of both artists. Smith plays in a realm of Nick Cave, while Mayfield has a unsettled sweetness that listeners cannot resist. “The Hook” is compelling and expressive. Hopefully, listeners will hear more from Rett Smith this year, as well as maybe some more collaborations.
Philine Sonny – “Same Light”
We are living in a golden age of expressive songwriters. It seems like daily, we discover a once in a year level talent. Case and point, Philine Sonny. Her vocals and songwriting give us the feels while the instrumentation on this is surprising, pulling listeners in immediately. The sax was especially unexpected but surprisingly works to accent just how talented the young artist is. There are undoubtedly going to be comparisons to Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, but Sonny is in her own creative universe. She both nods at those who came before, while being talented enough to push musical limits. The end result is something special.
