Paper Towns – “Tell me it will all work out” ft. Kris Berry
-There’s a subtle energy to this track that feels just the right level of cozy. It ushers the listener into the track which has a similar vibe to the lyrics. It’s about wanting someone to tell you it will all work out as the “lights go out.” There’s an intimacy here that feels really soft and sweet. In a world with so much abrasive energy, it’s really nice to connect with the calm energy of this recording. It has a chill folk guitar instrumentation, but it’s really the calm and unhurried vocals that set the mood here. Spin this one and ask your best one for a dance; you’ll both love it.
Daniel Del Russo – “Everyone Else”
-I’m not going to say it… I’m… I’m not going… AHHH this sounds like a Noah Kahan song! (I know, I hate derivative comparisons too, but I thought it every time I listened to this track, including this time.) Genuinely, though, I hope that listeners will give Del Russo a chance beyond the toe tapping folk energy and bouncy banjo style; this track really feels like quintessential 21st century folk music. The delicate folk harmonies are perfectly sweet to convey the lyrics about the need for us to be together. The message of the song is about transcending our differences and finding connection. Of course I love that. I’ve been writing about music for a decade and a half to try to bridge gaps across the globe. I feel this message in my soul.
Scott Cole and Sara Geist – “goner”
-One of my favorite things about covering new music is when a song just jumps off the page for me. That really happened in a big way with this track, which conveys this almost Ben Folds style energy right from the start; aspects of folk and pop that blend for something engaging almost beyond the sum of its parts. The production is crystal clear, allowing the listener to connect with each carefully crafted line. I dig the energy of the vocals and the moving folk meets alt rock melodic structure. If you’re an elder millennial (ahem) and miss the days that alt rock was half of the top 40, definitely spin this track. The lyrics are pretty fascinating as well, including metaphors and twists that you won’t see coming. Give it a play and hear what I mean. What a find!
