Jason Piquette – “Aspen”
-There’s something about Jason Piquette’s whispery vocal style that makes this song feel insanely cozy. The easy going acoustic guitar work here sets a lovely mood and the vocal keeps it nice and chill. The repeated lyric, “as long as I got you” really hits the spot. If you’ve ever been in love to the extent that you felt your best, truest self with someone, then this song will certainly resonate. I even like the way Piquette phrases the lines with this early-career John Mayer vibe to it (trust me… just feel it). Anyways, I’m super happy to be supporting a sound like this from such a satisfying and genuine artist. Put this on your coziest playlist and don’t look back. It’s great.
Uncle – “Harley”
-There’s something inherently accessible about the way this song starts with two voices and an acoustic guitar. One of the most common connection points between two strangers, “can I bum a light?” From this point, the song builds with a metaphorical desire to fly, but there’s also a rising energy in the song itself that moves along nicely. The song has a wonderful sense of movement, all while keeping a relatively chilled out structure. The vocal harmonies do a nice job of paralleling the rooted style of the song overall. In a world with so much polished, overly produced music, it’s nice to hear a recording that drips with authenticity. This is gritty and rewarding in the best way possible.
MerylJane – “Lowcountry Blues”
-It’s not every day that I hear a song that I know would have been successful in almost any generation, but this track has that style to it. Even from the naming of the song “Lowcountry Blues” sounds like something that Hank or Waylon could have come up with. The strumming of the guitar creates this cathartic energy that pulls the listener right into the story. The vocal is absolutely outstanding, creating a texture that welcomes the listener to the next development, like talking with an old friend over a cup of coffee. The lightness in the rhythm section does a great job of creating just the right amount of energy to allow the vocal to bounce along the top of it. With as many times as the lyrics repeat, “take my time,” I am beginning to think this song wants me to slow down and enjoy life a bit more. Great advice and a wonderfully rewarding tune.
