Florence Noon – “One Love”
-I dig this groove so much that I had to say “yes” to the track. The production is absolutely outstanding, allowing the listener to connect with the energy of the whole composition. The bass hits just right, creating a low structure that supports the rest. The vocal has this charming, almost friendly vibe to it, highlighting the hopefulness of the “one love” sentiment. If you had a relationship that didn’t work but you thought it was “the one,” this song is definitely for you. I appreciate the whimsical, almost youthful energy of the track from start to finish. This made me feel like I was floating.
B. Knox – “In Misery”
-Some might call this indie rock more than indie pop, but I’m here to jam not to split hairs. The energy of the track is up tempo right from the start, with a commanding lead vocal that demands the attention of the listener. The kickdrum keeps us moving along while the backing vocals add a bit of depth to the composition. The electric guitar riffs in between verses give the track a satisfying “rooted” feeling. The lyrical sentiment is about having an inability to self assess; it’s not a lack of confidence, rather a distraction of being “stuck on someone else” and how that takes away from being yourself. I don’t want to get too personal here, but I can definitely relate to this sentiment. For anyone who feels this, I hope it gets better for you (and soon). There’s nothing other people can say to help you out of it, but naming it and talking with others (friends, therapy, both) can really help. Nevertheless, the theme is real and the music is a bop, so this one is well worth a share with a friend.
Whym – “Scene Change”
-There’s a beautiful, atmospheric composition style to this track that captured my attention from first listen. I appreciate the unhurried vocal style that feels as much like a poem as like a song. The vocal reminds me a bit of the well-respected troubadour Anna Tivel. There’s a soft-spoken assertiveness to this track that I really admire; it’s lyrically about the concept of transition, a scene change between big personal and/or historical moments. “I am useless here and I say that with a smile on my face.” Yes, exactly. It’s a weird feeling to sit in a room and feel like you’re among strangers when, in fact, it’s your family or best friends. This song captures that sentiment expertly. I feel this song in my bones. I hope others will take time to connect with it as well.
