Jamie Scallion – “Satellites”
-There’s a ton of energy to this track that you can feel on first listen. The electric guitars create a solid base and the percussive style propels the song along well. The vocal on the chorus is particularly captivating. The line “as long as you believe in me and you” is exactly right. This is what it takes to have a solid relationship; both people need to invest and keep believing. There’s something almost Rolling Stones-like about the composition style here, yet it’s a bit more polished and less rough. The chord progression here bounces between familiar and fittingly standing out; I dig the overall style and the way the orchestral elements allow the rock aspects to feel special.
Rebecca Haviland and Whiskey Heart – “Late Nights and Early Mornings”
-I don’t even have to say it; about half of you are going to listen to the first line and think “dang, she sounds like Janis Joplin.” Once you get over that immediate comparison, you can ease into the powerful rock style. I like the verse and chorus, but this is one of those songs where the bridge really allows the vocal to soar and stand out. There’s a bluesy undercurrent to the track that makes it feel as much like a Red Clay Strays song as anyone and in 2025, that’s good territory to be inhabiting. Haviland has some power vocals and the band can absolutely rip, so this track belongs in your regular rock rotation.
