Three intriguing new Americana tracks that will get your toes tapping and open your heart

Zach Short – “Building a Home”
-If you’re looking for an up tempo style of Americana, definitely check out this acoustic track from Zach Short. It’s about cooperation, working together, and the joys of doing life together. It’s romantic, sure, but it’s also about how we’re stronger when we have someone by our side. I appreciate the expressive lyrical style and the clear vocal from Short. The stylistic mix of folksy Americana guitars with some shades of indie rock works for a sound that fits just with the amount of grit we like in our Americana lists. This one really sticks with ya, I’ll say that.

Alma Russ – “Magnolias”
-Nothing like a good ole tune about a working girl to remind us of our collective American roots. (He says with a nervous chuckle.) No, but seriously, this is a great tune. It’s got that endearing southern charm to it, including a delightful tone from the lead vocalist. The backing instrumentation feels like timeless Americana styles with guitars (and a mandolin, I think) dancing around the intersection of folk and country music for something deeply satisfying. So lean into this one, tap your toe and enjoy the rootsy energy of the lyrics while you’re at it. This is like a lesson in American music history all wrapped up in a delightful story worth exploring.

The Longshore Drifters – “Hurricanes and Razor Wire”
-This is a song about storms and love. It’s also a song about the remarkably satisfying sounds of a delicately played electric guitar over a classic rhythm section. I appreciate how unhurried this track is and the way that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The chord changes are so satisfying; I could picture some of them young folks dancing to this at a barn dance. But seriously… the balance between captivating lyrics and classic instrumentation makes this a must-listen track for me. If you’ve ever experienced the kind of love that burns really hot and you’d do anything to be with that person, this song is sure to resonate. It’s classic and lovely.
