tan sholto – “closer”
-There’s a soft gentle energy to this track that I really enjoyed from first listen. It’s about being closer with a lover. More than the lyrical content, though, I’m struck by the mood of the track and the way the production elements compliment the vocal style so well. It’s just this vibey indie pop style that’s sure to find a lot of support if it gets shared widely. I admire the quality of the vocal and the way it captures so much raw desire and emotion. It’s difficult to capture these sentiments in a way that feels genuine, but they really resonate on this indie pop track.
Emily Bateman – “What a Dream”
-I remember the day this submission came up on the list. At first I thought it was going to be this quirky atmospheric indie pop track for a niche part of our readership, but the more I listened the sound opened up into this genuine pop star goodness. The chorus soars with an energy that feels like it could work in an arena rock show. I’m thinking some of the post-Lilith pop like Kelly Clarkson and Lorde, there’s an element of gritty indie sound here balanced with some wide-open fascinating pop elements. The juxtaposition and overall stylistic blend truly “stands out from the crowd.” I hope this track lands with a solid following because it shows off some really fascinating songwriting and performance chops.
Nate Hunt – “Shaking It Off”
-When you first click play on this song you’re going to feel something that’s R&B adjacent, but trust me when I say it’s a colorful blend of several different genres. It’s most predominantly pop, but it gets there through a wonderful mix of influences. The syncopated beat on the chorus feels like it’s a dance song (that you could certainly move to). “Gotta me feelin’ the most.” If you’ve ever been moved by a relationship, this song will certainly resonate. Personally, I felt myself feeling like my younger self would have definitely vibed out to this song. It’s half a dance track and half a reflective love track; frankly, I think a club remix of this track would go hard. But that’s a bit out of my expertise as a folk and indie rock blogger, so I’ll leave it to the experts. Nevertheless, the sense of melody, timing, and groove on this song is well worth the exploration of a wide range of music fans.
