A pair of country tracks that will make you glad you follow indie music and not the mainstream radio

King Kyote – “Blackbird”
-The energy of this track is engaging right from the start. I hesitate to compare the vocal to Chris Stapleton, but there is definitely some similar intonation and style going on. This track has an easygoing energy that makes the listener want to sing along, especially on the chorus. It’s right at the intersection of rock and country music, with the steel guitar carrying a lot of weight making it feel more like country. Frankly, it’s a sound that reminds me a bit of the country music that was popular in the 90s with the likes of Garth Brooks dominating the charts. It’s a welcome sound for country music who are sick of the genre being more like… “pop.” Give it a spin!

Logan Mac – “Dance Under Stars”
-There’s this whole movement in country music that started with Sturgill and Tyler Childers, but the whole Zach Bryan movement seems to have inspired a whole host of similar sounding emotional songwriters. To be honest, the raspy sincerity of Logan Mac’s style feels genuine to me so he’s worth his own feature here. In other words, while it might parallel some of these other artists, I do believe that Logan Mac’s art deserves to stand on its own. The line “don’t chase the money when it comes and goes” reminds me of one of Sturgill’s songs about getting advise from a loved one. In fact, in the PR copy for this song the artist explained that this song is inspired directly by advice from his own father. It’s a song that feels timeless and meaningful with proverb-like sections of how-to-live commentary.
