Three tracks in the rock family of genres that go in different yet interesting directions

Marmalade – “Houston”
-Maybe you’d call it chill rock music… or alt rock… or at times some version of pop rock. But this track from Marmalade has elements that I appreciate. The melody pushes along nicely and the vocal harmonies are really well done. The lyrics are a call for help, the feeling of being sick of your own behavior. It’s definitely personal and engaging in that regard. The feel good nature of the music balances well with the self awareness of the lyrics. It’s a good song for our time.

Kylie Rothfield – “The Barrel”
-I wasn’t sure what to make of this song the first time I heard it. I mean it feels so good; the beat is good, the vocal is incredible, and the lyrics are interesting. But… what… IS it? I think it’s a bit of a heartache song. It’s also a bit of a declaration to do better in the future, especially in the way we treat ourselves. I love the soulful work on the chorus and the jazzy chord inflections that certainly make the song stand out. Fans of the intersection of pop, rock, and soul will find a lot to like about this sound. I’m trying to think of a good comp here, but honestly I keep getting late 90s pop and alt pop vibes. Give it a spin and let me know what you think.

Clamp – “On the Corner at the Center of the World”
-I am always a sucker for unique lyrics and a message that takes a minute to understand. I appreciate how the instrumentation of this track has a dynamism to it, inviting the listener in for the adventure. It’s almost cinematic in the grandiose rock style of it. The vocal is situated right in the center of the mix, pulling the listener in to listen closely and try to catch the message. The way the sound opens up in the chorus complete with some great vocal harmonies makes it a song I can wholeheartedly support. I think the lyrics are about a fresh start, a new beginning.
