Three authentic folk singer songwriters you’ll want to share with your friends

Bryant Roses – “Leave It Shining”
-It’s really difficult to find authentic folk music that stands out from the crowd. When I clicked on this track from Bryant Roses I was struck by both the quality of the fingerpicking and the authenticity of the vocal. I really appreciate how the layered vocal harmony also makes the sound resonate so well. It’s a melody that feels easy to connect with, allowing the listener to feel the sincerity of the lyrics as well. The concept reminds me of other country tracks about leaving lights on for a bygone lover, but this one is more of a comforting sentiment; come home and I’ll take care of you. It’s sweet and genuine.

Mabilene – “The Mirage”
-If you’re a fan of classic country music, you’ll find a lot to like in this track from Mabilene. The jazzy chord structure show just how close the roots of the two genres really are. It reminds me of something that a young Dolly Parton or Kitty Wells would have produced several decades ago. The sentimentality in the chromatic melody on the chorus is really satisfying. The questioning lyric, “how can I belong to you? I’m walking out your door” is heartachingly sincere. Mabilene’s vocal packs a punch in a subtle way, but it’s definitely a voice I hope to hear more in the future. This is a classic sound brought back to life!

James Benson – “The Rain”
-The phrasing on this song is on another level; I mean the voice is great and the lyrical concept works well, but the phrasing really stands out. Benson delivers each line like he means them. There’s a depth and sincerity to the track that makes it emerge from the crowd. There’s a comforting style to the guitar work that feels like sitting down with an old friend to listen to them tell their story. The subtle strings in the background create a depth to the song that works well. The sentimental, “you gave me a place that felt like home” conveys the emotions of the song well. I like the way this song sound and I love the way it makes me feel. This one is from a different place… and I’m here for it.
