Jaeyla – “potential love song”
-This song has it all; there’s a connection of different music styles from 90s alt rock to contemporary danceable rock and seemingly everything in between. There’s a liberated energy to the main lyrical message that feels just right for modern audiences. It’s about making choices and feeling the freedom of those options as well as the weight of the consequences. Something about the dance energy on the chorus has a wonderful, engaging melodic structure to it. Where some rock veers into discordant and awkward moments, this track takes on a really fun and vibrant pop energy. The twisting, unconventional chord progressions on the bridge are excellent, putting me in mind of musical theater. In what is one of the highest compliment I could give a song, I wish I could go back in time and place this with my friends in high school; they would have loved this one!
VICTOR – “Dry”
-Sometimes an electric guitar is just a part of a song, and sometimes the electric guitar is the soul of the song. The lilting guitar provides the heartbeat and spirit of this track, with the vocals coming over the top with a beautiful and accessible style. It’s an unhurried but nevertheless emotionally appealing song. “I don’t think I can hold on to you… I stand my ground, but… you just keep leavin’ dry.” I think this is a song about a person who can’t make or keep their commitments. I love the way this band has taken that concept and turned it into such an emotional appeal. The increased speed on the bridge transitions the song into a bit more of a rock tune and it really works. There’s a lot of complexity in this composition and it deserves to be widely heard.
Inn Laws – “Pieces”
-Instead of writing a review of this song, I should just record my head bobbing with the smirk I have on my face with every listen. I like the opening verse and the quality of the composition, but I will tell you when the rest of the vocals come in on that first chorus… WHEW! This song absolutely pops! The dynamics on this track are absolutely on point. Heck, this track could be used for a music theory class; it has everything with these pops and redirections that pull the listener in with familiar rhythms and then unsettle us (in a good way) with bluesy, rock-y twists and turns. It’s ultimately, lyrically, a song about the desire for a relationship to work out because there is a desire to be together, to make it work despite the challenges. It’s a fantastic song and, frankly, one of the best bluesy rock tracks I’ve heard all year.
