Two Runner – “Late Dinner”
-Everything about this song appeals to the type of Americana we like to feature on EarToTheGround. The vocals are amazing, with that lonesome quality to them that makes them feel full and satisfying. The harmonies are classic and rich. The bass and the fiddle work really well together on this song, creating a depth that makes my toes tap and my face smile. There’s a longing in the lyrics about desiring someone that feels genuine; if you’ve ever longed to be with someone that you love, this song will resonate. I appreciate the combination of the classic sound with the relatable lyrics; this is what Americana music is all about for us.
Emmy Ryan – “I Ain’t So Blue”
-I love that music like this exists in the 21st century. It’s such a quintessential early 20th century sound, with a warmth in the rhythm section and the simplicity of the vocal. The poetic lyrics and waltz timing do a great job of creating a nostalgic sensibility. The vocalist does a great job of handling a challenging melody line with some unique twists and turns, pulling the listener along for a thoughtful and deceptively complex track. Lean in and listen to the storytelling, think about these songs to find out “what hurts.” Amen to that. It’s beautiful to hear how a folksy roots country song can be so closely related to what musicologists would call the blues. They’re kissing cousins.
Albert Gary Lewis – “So Many Ways To Get You High”
-Generally, we do not condone drug use and will often reject songs for being focused on such themes. That said, please keep listening to this song and you’ll understand that the message is about a lot more than the substances in the lyrics. First of all, I really appreciate the quality of the banjo work. The vocal does a nice job of conveying the sincerity of the message. Ultimately, though, the song is about how the love of someone special can make you feel better than these substances that we tend to idolize as a society. Also, I’m always going to support a song with a whistle solo for a bridge. I mean… it’s awesome. The whole song tickles that part of my spirit that loves Americana music; it’s wholesome in an ironic way and that’s definitely worth featuring.
