Calm Canopy and Sylvia Lily – “One Day”
-I try to find music that you’re not expecting; I try to curate sounds that are different in a way that stays true to the principles of good music. This song “One Day” is absolutely the perfect for being a fresh take on a classic sound. The opening, especially, has layered horns before allowing the vocal harmonies to take over. But I’ll tell you what, when those saxophones come back in for the instrumental breaks, they continue to rip with that throaty intentionality. The dynamics on this track are surreal in the best way possible. Imagine a good folk band being taken over by a saucy rock band and producer; it’s a sound that I guarantee you’ve never heard before and you are going to appreciate if you give it a chance.
4DAYWKND – “Marianna”
-All it takes to get a rock song going is a kick drum and a good guitar riff. This song has that energy right from the start. Once the vocal enters, the song soars even more so. I often say that songs with a name are either a love song or a breakup song; this one is the former, a declaration of love and dedication for a person named “Marianna.” The beat is straightforward and the vocal has just enough gruffness to give it that class rock edge. It’s a cool sound and will fit nicely on indie rock lists.
Wilson Music – “Alive in the Dying Light”
-If you’re a fan of creative expressions of rock, this song is going to definitely connect for you. From the first time I clicked play on it, I thought, “oh this is different in a good way.” There’s a mysterious vibe in the opening that feels equal parts blues and driving rock; it creates a sense of tension. Once the vocal enters with a characteristic blues sincerity, the song feels like it means everything it says. The line, “the world ain’t what it seems” and the title lyric “alive in the dying light” both carry a depth that you may not expect from traditional rock music. It feels like a well-earned darkness; the creators of this piece of art seem to have experienced some darkness that they express while also capturing the need to focus on the light… even in the midst of dying. What a lesson, what a track.
