Johnny Franco – “When I’m Finally Over”
-I can’t help it… I have to say it… this song makes me think of the Beatles. In particular, Franco has a style like another very specific Johnny… Lennon, that is. The lyrical style is charming, intriguing, and meaningful. The folksy rock elements work perfectly with this sound. While there are hints of psychedelic sounds here, they are not overwhelming to the sound. I just appreciate how well the production captures a historical mood (i.e. the 1960s) while also feeling like a fresh new take on a classic sound. This one is a gem.
Inland Isle – “Born Ahead”
-Okay so I know these lyrics are a play on words, but I’m not sure I’ve completely sorted out the meaning (despite several listens) and… I am beginning to think that’s the point. It’s a song about having an impressive record collection that makes you feel like you were born at the wrong time. Maybe. But musically, I appreciate the folk rock elements that coalesce into a complex contemporary rock sound in some places. The layers are really interesting, reminding me of something you’d expect from an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical rather than a folk rock track, but it works. This is a truly unique piece.
Aubory Bugg – “friends?”
-I don’t say it lightly that Bugg has a bit of a Lizzy McAlpine sentiment in her composition. The song is about the questionable status between friend and lover; it’s beautiful and heartfelt. The delicate lyrical sense of the song is absolutely stunning. The guitar provides a wonderful base to a contemplative and even sensual style of song. “I want more than a good time, you can show me your pain.” Wow. This is a really well written song and deserves to be widely supported.
