Hannah Juanita – “Granny’s Cutlass Supreme”
-I’ve listened to this track more times than I care to admit since we received the submission. I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying that I know people like the main character here, but… let’s just say the sentiments are very familiar. The throwback country style has all the makings of mid-century hit country music. It’s got cheeky lyrics and a theme about a powerful woman who knows how to take care of her car, herself, and her family. “It ain’t about where you go, it’s about putting on a show.” It’s about hard work and taking pride in your work. If you grew up in particular time and place in American culture, this song will remind you of someone… or many folks. All I can say is that if there is justice in the world, someone will make sure that Dolly Parton hears this song.
John Cable – “Jericho”
-If the name John Cable seems familiar, it’s because he was a guitarist in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. A veritable legend, we’re happy to support the art of this master of the music that we feature. We’re humbled he even knew about our site to submit this track. That said, let’s not lose sight of how good this tune is with classic folksy instrumentation and accessible lyricism. I like the lyrical concept about the time that goes by when we’re so busy living our lives and lose track of time. If you’ve been in a long term relationship, this song is definitely relatable. When things go wrong (like the walls of Jericho falling), you have to rebuild. The one consistent theme in a healthy relationship is perseverance; when things don’t work out, we press on. There’s a gospel sentiment to the song that makes it particularly moving. If you like traditional instrumentation and a classic folk sentimentality, definitely check out this track from John Cable.
Mr and Mrs – “Somewhere in Between”
-The opening atmospheric style on this track feels almost cinematic, which may not be the type of Americana you typically hear around here. Bear with me, though. This is definitely a song that you’ll want to consider. The performance is careful, expressive, and meaningful. The duo work on this track is really special, conveying a tenderness that is well worth taking some time to appreciate. If you’ve ever experienced a love where both people are seeking to love each other better, the sentiments here are quite genuine and moving. It’s about romance, but it’s also about finding a soulful connection of putting someone else above yourself. It is, frankly, breathtaking. “I will always choose you darling. I don’t have the words to say.” Indeed.
