Mindy Gledhill – “The Edge of the World”
-There’s an exceptional energy to this song that’s hard to put into words without saying, “you just need to listen.” I don’t mean to compare too many artists to Lizzy McAlpine this year, but honestly this track from Mindy Gledhill does seem to take on that style. The cathartic acoustic guitar sets the basis while the gorgeous vocal feels almost otherworldly. The vocal dances along the upper register, creating an almost “floating” sense to it. I cannot express how much I love the delicate chord changes on the bridge. This is an exquisite song and I’m so glad to feature it here.
Mingo Drive – “Color Blind Stories”
-The beginning of this song reminds me of a Coldplay deep cut. The middle of the song reminds me of an energetic contemporary indie rock tune. The whole composition of the track feels like the quintessential snappy indie pop rock band that would be amazing to see live. I appreciate the flourishes in production that make it feel like a coalescence of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. It’s really a great menagerie of sounds that you’ll love on your playlist. It’s good for indie pop, indie rock, and certainly for those more energetic dream pop playlists to bring inspiration to life. I could picture myself listening to this for a workout or a nice long creativity session; it pops for both.
Virens – “jane doe”
-This song has an energy unlike anything you’ve ever heard. There are some production choices with intricate unique percussion instruments that provide an introduction, but once the full band and vocal harmonies enter it becomes a whole other majestic composition. The line “girl with no name, buried alone” is absolutely heart wrenching. There’s something deeply sorrowful about the main idea of the song, yet I find a strange peace in knowing this song was written for a lot of Jane Does that exist in the world. I’ve never heard a song quite like it, but it is a standout indie rock and indie pop performance that I hope finds a wide audience. This artistry deserves to be widely appreciated.
