Oliver Hazard – “Wild Eyed Blue”
-The opening line of this song is, “I killed the king.” Wow. I appreciate everything about this song from the rowdy energy to the exceptional harmonies. If you miss the Mumford and Sons foot-stomping folk of the early 2000s, you’ll find a lot to like about this new track from Oliver Hazard. The sound reminds me of the harmonies I love from Darlingside mixed with the up tempo stylings of a good old country hoe-down. The combination is electrifying and energetic. If you’ve been head over heels for someone, this song will definitely resonate. I know I like it!
Lonnie Rott – “Working for You”
-If you’re a fan of chill narrative folk music, you have come to the right place. This new track from Lonnie Rott is pretty much the quintessential folk tune. This is the kind of music that is why I started writing about music all those years ago. The acoustic lines are clean, the lyrics are relatable, and the final product is an endearing song well worth supporting. I appreciate the way Rott’s vocal describes each line with precision and emotion in equal measure. If you’ve ever benefited from the wisdom of a hard working grandparent, this song is for you. It’s so good.
Rose Morrison – “The River She Knows”
-This song reminds me of one of my favorite songs of all time, “Help Me Make It Through the Night” by Kris Kristofferson. The pacing, the lyrics, and the entire composition is absolutely beautifully done here. Morrison’s unhurried approach is exactly what I like about a good narrative folk tune. You just can’t help but lean in and wait for the next line. This is what country and folk music are all about for me; it’s about a river, about a love, and about a deeply human connection between the people and the place where they live. This song sounds like what it feels like to read a Wendell Berry book. I hope you’ll give it some serious consideration.
