Three new songs showing the wild and exciting textures of contemporary rock music

Silver Lake Radio – “First Gray Hair”
-This is a great tune that straddles the line between rock and country music, right in the realm of what folks call alt country these days. That said, I think it fits nicely here as a chill texture with rock n’ roll music. The songwriting has a relatable comment about watching a loved one find their first gray hair. It’s a bit of existential contemplation, depicted with this charming and engaging style. It puts me in mind of the charming yet wildly hard hitting lyricism we get from an artist like Jason Isbell or Sturgill Simpson. It’s a great tune with some incredible guitar work and a quality vocal. Spin it!

Matthew Mayfield – “Die in a Ghost Town”
-If you’ve been around ETTG for any length of time, you know Matthew Mayfield’s name. In fact, he was my first ever interview. His music will always special place in my heart. That said, this new sound is very much quintessential Mayfield style. His love for grunge as well as classic rock like Guns N Roses comes through on this. The growling, deep vocal on this fulfills his purpose in conveying a dark message. The lyrics are ultimately about resilience, but to survive this ghost town there’s a fight. Mayfield is willing to “go there” so you can feel the energy on the other side. As usual, his songwriting has a deep philosophical and contemplative style, all while making you want to crank it so loud you blow out your speakers. This man bleeds rock n’ roll.

SUNBURNT – “Tunnel Vision”
-I’ve been a fan of pop punk music from the first time I heard the genre back in the late 90s. I’m a sucker for a power chord and some great harmonies. There’s a light energy to this song that makes it feel like Good Charlotte or Sum41. It also sounds like a time machine, throwing me back to the early days of my college life driving too fast with little responsibility. These lyrics even feel relatable, “life is a balance… some days you’ll feel nothing, some days you’ll feel tall.” Amen to that. Good beat, great chords, and singalong hook-laden lines just beg for the listener to join in! This is great!
