Kacy Lee Anderson and the Waverley Pickers – “#croptopnroll”
-You wouldn’t expect a song with a hashtag in its name to sound so old fashioned, but here we are. I love this sound; it’s got a real Kitty Wells vibe. It’s old fashioned in the best way possible. The lead vocal even has that subtle warble that makes it sound just right for the mid-20th century. The piano sounds vintage and the guitars are just perfectly honkytonk. The whole experience feels like stepping back in time and I love the sound.
Ontario Red – “Keeping Guard”
-Everything about this composition sounds like an old, charming sound. The lead vocal is quality. The instrumentation has a nice timeless quality with elements of roots country and bluegrass. There’s a sweet, easy going sway to the rhythm that keeps it moving along like a two step at the end of a long night in the honkytonk. There’s a gentle little chord progression on the chorus that feels warm and rewarding. The vocal harmonies really make the sound pop. This is definitely one to add to your roots country playlist.
Harry Lee Follon – “Won’t Say Goodbye”
-The opening of this song sounds a lot like a Tyler Childers song… and that’s pretty dang high praise. Follon has his own vocal style and songwriting influence. The track feels like a collection of common phrases and ideas from classic country music, like rambling ways and a change of heart to ramble less. It’s a sweet message with a calm acoustic energy to it. Fans of classic or roots country will find a lot to like both in Follon’s songwriting as well as the overall production. This one’s a keeper… and the fiddle solo at the end is the perfect sendoff.
