Jonah Kagan – “God Needs the Devil”
-If you’ve been around ETTG for any length of time, you know we’re suckers for songs that have a religious or spiritual theme. We also dig rootsy folk music, so imagine my surprise when I found this excellent song from Jonah Kagan. The style feels like a combination of Tyler Childers and a pop artist like Benson Boone. The blend is absolutely fantastic. The metaphor of an addiction to a person has some fascinating connotations. “I need you like God needs the devil. Some day soon this dust gonna settle.” Whew. This is spine-tingling WILD and worth a listen.
So Blue – “Milwaukee”
-There’s something special about an acoustic song that feels unhurried. There’s a confident control to the way this song unfolds. The vocal quality on the lead is good, but once the harmony enters this song goes from good to great. I am not overstating at all when I say this sounds a bit like Mandolin Orange. The subtle rhythm changes are also outstanding. I can’t imagine the musicianship it takes to coordinate this type of performance, but I’m really glad that we found it. This is folk, Americana, and in a word that defies genre… CAPTIVATING.
Dan Healy – “All The Same”
-Remember that time that Bob Dylan made a full album of Christian music? This song is like that. It’s a LOT like that. There’s a definitive political, social, and spiritual message. The blending between conventional folk instrumentation and more of an orchestral sound works well. Also, I can’t quite put my finger on why, but there are some elements that put me a bit in mind of Buckley’s “Hallelujah.” It’s an unique tune that’s sure to garner a lot of interest from new folk fans.
