Madeleine Mayi – “Faithless”
-This is one of the most important songs I’ve heard in 2024. It is timely for the questions it asks, the answers it provides, and the central concern of the supernatural. If you grew up in a religious context and find yourself asking faith questions, this song is absolutely for you. This is a theme that we’ve been covering since Noah Gundersen’s “Jesus Jesus” in the early days of our blog. Mayi’s magical use of electronic elements creates a soaring, atmospheric quality for these hard questions. I’m a music blogger and not a theologian, but I will say that these are great inquiries and I sincerely hope that Mayi as well as others who resonate with these lyrics find the answers that you all seek.
MacLaine – “When You Wake”
-There’s a mesmerizing quality to the guitar on this track from MacLaine. The plaintive, almost poetic style of the lyrics definitely pop for me right away. There’s a romance to the song that’s definitely different than a typical love song. It almost feels like there’s an awkwardness between the main characters, but it really works well. It captures the insecurity of the early stages of a relationship. The layered vocals on the chorus really work well. The whole mood is unconventional in a delightfully refreshing way. For fans of Orla Gartland and company.
Leonard Wellington – “My Song”
-If you’re a fan of atmospheric rock-influenced vibey alt pop music, definitely give Leonard Wellington a spin. This track has elements of pop rock alongside unique electronic vibes that works really well here. The syncopation in the beat and the layers of production make for an almost hypnotic listening experience. The lyrics are about feeling insecure and acting out as a result. It’s a confessional, deeply personal song that’s sure to be relatable to a lot of listeners. At the end of the day, the lyrics provide a message about the importance of perseverance even when it feels like things are your fault. Press on.
