Alara – “Even When It’s Over”
-There’s a magical energy to this song that you’ll hear from the moment Alara starts singing. The sweetness in the line, “think I’m gonna love you forever” resonates. The lyrical concept of the song is that “even when it’s over, it’s forever.” Talk about romance. Swoon! This is a really beautiful piece of songwriting that captures the heart of what true love really is, that is to say love that has no bounds. Alara writes with sincerity, but it’s the vocal delivery that makes it go from good to great.
Virens – “Apocalypse”
-If you’re a fan of acoustic folk music, you’ll like this song. The lead vocal has a beautiful quality to it. The combination of the acoustic fingerpicking and the great vocal works really well here. I also love the chromatic melody style. The lyrical imagery (especially scene about the couple in Pompeii) is absolutely wonderful, despite the view that the world is coming to an end. I’m not here to talk philosophy (or eschatology, for that matter), but I have to say that the message of hope and love in the midst of (maybe?) the end of the world is certainly something I support… especially when it sounds this nice.
Madelyn Jones – “Alaska”
-I’m not gonna lie… 2024 is a Lizzy McAlpine year for me, so when I heard Madelyn Jones’ voice I was completely impressed by how similar it is to McAlpine. This is not an easy type of singing to master, but Jones makes it sound easy. The narrative songwriting style invites the listener into the storyline and the vivid natural imagery. But it’s the soaring vocal that does it for me… absolutely impressive! This is a good song by a talented young songwriter. As much as I like this track, I’m even more thrilled to discover this talent that we can follow for years to come. Folk pop done right!
