Three unique tracks in the alt pop space to capture your attention

dopameen – “Try”
-I don’t usually approve tracks with a spoken word opening, but this one is worth it. Hang on and wait for the vocal. The energy of this track is smooth and vibey, complete with a cool lead vocal full of emotion. Once the harmonies enter the track on the chorus, it moves from good to great. It’s got a sort of Bruno Mars style to it, with a snappy soulful style to it. More than the lyrical message, I just like the way the song makes me feel when I listen to it. I hope you dig it too.

Taylor Bickett – “I Like Mondays”
-I know what you’re thinking… there’s an easy comp here with another artist named Taylor. It’s pretty evident from the start that there’s a Taylor Swift energy here in some ways. What I really like about this track, though, is that it has these emotive, engaging lyrics. The vocal performance is great, too. The composition style has a witty, sharpness to it that rolls from one line to the next. This is a very dated reference, but it makes me feel the way I felt when I first heard John Mayer. It makes you feel hip and trendy to know about this new artist… but, I mean, try to find better words than “hip and trendy” so you don’t sound like a boomer like me. Bickett is talented and this song is fantastic.

Alex Blue – “May It Change You”
-Fans of expressive folk songwriting are going to like this song. Alex Blue writes with sincerity and depth, evident right from the start of this track. There’s a cool alt pop energy to the composition style. The lyrics are empowering, reflecting on the power and strength it takes to leave a troubled relationship. Blue’s style has elements of folk and even throwback country, but like others in those spaces, it’s the authenticity that anchors the sound. You just believe this artist. It’s a gorgeous piece of songwriting about finding hope on the other side of trouble.
