Three new folk singer songwriters who make us feel good about music again

argyles – “love comes right back”
-Everything about this track resonates with the type of music we’ve been supporting on ETTG since our infancy. The acoustic guitar and the vocal are in perfect balance, pulling the listener in right from the start. The lyrical concept is familiar yet sweet, “love comes right back to you when you let it go.” It’s a universal truth, expressed with gracefulness. The electric guitar solo and, really, the entire understated instrumentation do a great job of allowing the lyrical message to resonate. The best part (or one of them) is that the song feels truly unique; I’ve heard a lot of folk music in the past decade and I’m not sure I’ve heard anything quite like this. It’s definitely worth sharing.

Lyncs – “Ashes”
-I went back and looked; this is our fifth time covering Lyncs in the past year. That’s rarified air, there. This is an absolutely magical song from an extremely talented artist. Do you have any idea how hard it is to create a captivating sound like this? Lyncs has characters in this song that we don’t know as listeners, yet the mood conveys everything we need to know; it’s a breakup, it’s heartache, it’s sadness, but she’s “getting through it.” The lyric that gets it, though, “I burned all the notes that you left me, but can’t throw away the ashes.” Wow. Seriously wow. That’s songwriting. If I could invest in Lyncs, I would buy as many shares as I could afford. This is a talent going to the moon!

Whitney Fenimore – “Punching Bag”
-I love a good genre blend when it’s done well. Whitney Fenimore has the voice and style for that folk-meets-country-meets-pop sound that is quite popular these days. There’s a quality to Fenimore’s voice that makes me feel a real connection to the music. The lyrical lines are expressive and engaging, with a romantic and longing sensibility. There’s a confessional rawness to it, “all my mess has you ripped at the seams.” Wow. If you’ve ever been in an intimate relationship and realized you’ve hurt your partner, this song will absolutely cut you deep. The juxtaposition between the chill vibes of the instrumentation and the depth of the emotional meaning… is really something to behold. This is a powerful piece of songwriting that deserves a much wider audience.
