Three folk artists keeping the depth and beauty of the genre alive in 2024

McKay – “Last Man Alive”
-I’ve thought on many occasions about what it would be like to be the last man alive. This song does a great job of expressing some of those sentiments. The acoustic guitar and piano work together really well on this track. The harmonica pulls some heavy weight on this tune, as well. The questions about wealth and appearance are really intriguing; it ends up being a philosophical reflection about how we find meaning. It’s a great song with a meaningful message.

Lana Nauphal – “Is It Raining in California?”
-This is an incredible song with echoes of early country music and folk blended in seamless fashion. The vocal, though, wins the day. Genre be darned, this is just a good storytelling song. It’s a self referential song about being an artist. The backing band provides a solid basis for the quality vocal to take the listener on an adventure. The subtle harmonies on the crooning, heartache chorus work quite well. This one feels like a nice drink going down smooth.

Gentle Sparrow – “Shining a Light Over You”
-If you like expressive singer songwriters, Gentle Sparrow is a great place to start. The lyrics have a poetic element to them, propelling the narrative along nicely. The melodic structure is rich and satisfying, moving from each line to the next. The song is so smooth and natural that it makes it seem like this was an easy process to write. I’m sure it wasn’t. The song is about being selfless to help someone, to be a helpmate, to be a heart that someone can always come home to all while shining a light. It’s an expression of love as well as devotion.
