Ashlyn Wolfe – “Ready in Time”
-If you’re a fan of quality songwriting and beautiful vocals, definitely give Ashlyn Wolfe’s music a try. This song feels like it brings together a lot of emotion. The balance between the piano and the layered vocal works really well. It’s a breakup song with a sense of vulnerability in realizing that the relationship was not going to go well. The presence of mind and wisdom it takes to see this disconnection is quite profound. It’s a mature, thoughtful song with a great piano melody to convey the emotions.
Sea Glass – “5 pm”
-When I tell people I like indie pop music, this is the type of sound that I’m talking about. It’s such a sweet and approachable version of pop. The vocal on this track cuts through the production in a way that feels both comfortable as well as precise. The lyrics are romantic, with the highlight line that “even at our worst we’re still singing in time.” That’s just delightful. As someone who met my wife singing in college (and still together 17 years later), this song really resonates. It’s personable, sweet, and sounds the way a warm hug feels.
Starbloom – “Part of the Rug”
-Now this… this is a fascinating song. Have you ever heard the term “ear worm?” That’s what this song is for me. It’s got this uke-driven style and an excellent lead vocal. The lyrics are layered with this interesting contemplation on fitting in (or is it about exclusion)? The chords have this beautiful optimistic sweetness to them, but ultimately the song itself is about being rejected by others who just slap you away. If that’s not relatable… sheesh! All of us creatives (songwriters, musicians, writers, etc.) have all had this experience, so the song seems to transcend Starbloom’s experience. It’s a bit of an anthem for all of us, in a way. It’s just a really great tune, too.
