Sophian – “Beautiful Day”
-The guitars on this song fulfill two purposes; they move the melody along while also setting the mood for the track as this atmospheric, vibey space. I really appreciate the use of sound to create a space that feels so comfortable and cool. The lyrical theme is a reassurance of being with someone and promising to be with them for support. If you’ve ever had a day where it just felt like everything was just right where you didn’t have to “worry about a thing” then this song will resonate. It’s vibey in all the best ways, that’s for sure.
Emelia – “On My Way”
-There’s a unique mix of an up tempo rhythm with a chilled out melodic construct here that makes this song stand out. I appreciate how much it feels like a road trip song. The vocal is quite impressive, making the narrative message have a smooth and endearing style. The break for the chorus has a nice stylistic shift from the main verses. The lyrical theme is about the journey of getting closer to “home.” The declarative, “I’m on my way” is definitely relatable to anyone in their 20s (or who has lived through that decade). This is a song about pathfinding — and it works really well.
Jamie Gelman – “Just a Kid”
-The vibes on this track are really fascinating; it’s a song about maturity and growing up yet feeling like you’re still “just a kid.” The coming of age theme on this one is evident from the very start. Gelman has a voice that feels like talking to a dear friend about their struggles. The pop melodic construct is a vehicle for delivering this relatable, almost universally human experience of feeling uncomfortable, confused, and lost. I hope folks listening to this who can relate to being so lost will reach out to someone who can help. Find a friend or family member who will listen and tell them how you’re feeling; it’s helpful to know that we all feel this way sometimes and you’ll get through it.
